What’s Behind the 2026 Jalapeño Recall?

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a produce supplier called Coast Citrus Distributors began voluntarily recalling fresh jalapenos at the end of July due to potential Salmonella contamination. Over 400 people across 32 states have become ill, including Illinois.

What Foods are Unsafe to Eat in Illinois?

The FDA has compiled a list of stores and brands to avoid in the states where the contaminated products have been sold. Stores with warnings in Illinois include Kroger, Walmart, and Whole Foods. Products to avoid include spicy Jarlsberg dip, spicy pimento cheese dip, and various salsas and pico de gallos.

What are the Symptoms of Salmonella Poisoning?

Salmonella typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps that start within a few days of exposure. Most people recover without treatment, but in some cases, it can become life-threatening. Young children, older adults, or anyone with a weakened immune system are at higher risk.
