Spring 2016: Recent Food Recalls You Should Know About

Foods and related products are recalled all the time. Sometimes, a recall happens as a preventative measure after a manufacturer finds a defect in a crop or a shipment of items. Other times, a recall does not happen until consumers, sometimes hundreds, become ill from eating an affected food product. In other cases still, a recall is issued not because of a fear of contamination, but because the product was not produced according to industry- or federally-imposed regulations.

One of the best ways you can protect yourself and your family from succumbing to food poisoning is keeping yourself aware of the current food recalls issued by the Food and Drug Administration or the United States Department of Agriculture. Some of the most recent food recalls to note include:

Greencore USA Wraps and Salads

Greencore USA produces wraps and salads that are sold at various retailers, including Starbucks and Turkey Hill stores. A recent shipment of the products was recalled because it was produced outside of production hours, without federal inspection.

Old Home Creme Cakes

These snack cakes, which include lemon, strawberry, and vanilla crème varieties, had to be recalled because their packaging did not disclose that they contain peanuts. Individuals with peanut allergies could potentially become very ill from consuming these cakes.

World's Choice Products

World's Choice recalled select shipments of its Supreme Elixir, Kid's Juice, and Xtreme Fiber Detox because they contained undisclosed milk and soy allergens, which could pose a hazard to individuals with such allergies.

Making It a Lifestyle Capsules

Supplements can be recalled as well. Black Gold X Advanced, 3rd Degree, and Black Label X supplements from Making It a Lifestyle, a vitamin and supplement company, had to be recalled because they were found to contain sildenafil and sibutramine, which made them unapproved new drugs. When a new drug is released in the United States, it must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure that it is safe for individuals to consume. The compounds present in this line of capsules could potentially have a dramatic negative impact on consumers.

Matlaw's Raw EZ Peel Shrimp

Matlaw's Raw EZ Peel Deveined Shell-on Shrimp that had been shipped to 17 states had to be recalled because of concerns about possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled shipment was more than 32,000 pounds of shrimp.
